Counterbalance forklift Training
OSHA does require operators utilizing a counterbalanced forklift to have received lecture style or classroom training. They additionally require that a supervised driving course is completed in addition to periodic refresher training. There is no required minimum time for the classroom training or supervised driving. Additionally, there is no frequency mandated for the refresher training either.
Counterbalanced Forklifts
The counterbalanced forklift's weight is used to balance its load utilizing its own weight. The lift truck forks are in a fixed position but could be raised and lowered to secure and transport cargo. The forks run parallel to the body of the forklift. OSHA require that individuals who will be using counterbalanced forklifts on the job be correctly trained on the trucks while being in the environment which they would be using them.
Classroom Training
Classroom training or lecture style training offers information about the truck which the operator would be utilizing. This training covers aspects such as weight and load capacity, height, how to charge or fuel the lift truck. It covers how to gauge the time on the engine as well as any lift truck specific safety information like for example where to stand when walking around the truck. Either written and/or oral testing is part of the classroom training. There is no required minimum time for the training.
Supervised Driving
The forklift driver has to learn how to operate the counterbalanced forklift while being supervised. The supervised driving has to take place in an area which reflects the environment the driver will be driving in. This atmosphere should include the kind of terrain she will be traveling on, have the same vehicle and pedestrian traffic nearby, and similar surrounding structures close by too. There is no specific minimum number of hours the driver needs to drive while being supervised.
