A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machinery that is somewhat similar to a forklift. It allows the operator to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain objects, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Usually, order pickers are powered by electricity. These kind of machinery are mostly utilized in a warehouse setting. Usually they are utilized for moving pallets and doing certain tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The operator of an order picker uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting that normally sits fairly near the ground. The operator can direct the machine to go backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades could be lifted up to the required level which makes it very convenient for the operator. For example, if the materials required, are situated on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then entire platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then directed or driven to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, however, some companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker can also put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be utilized to complete these specific tasks at several companies instead.
